The New York Times reported that Samsung has unveiled the third “eco-phone”, the E200 Eco, which has parts made from bioplastics. The handset packaging is also made of recycled materials. Bioplastics materials are extracted from corn. The E200 Eco is the first to have an entire case made from bioplastic. Cheil Industries, which is a part of the Samsung Group, has been developing environmentally friendly materials. The E200 Eco features a 1.3-megapixel camera, Video messaging, and a MP3 player. The E200 Eco will be available in Europe next month. Not word when the handset will be available in the U.S. Last June, Samsung unveiled 2 handsets, the W510 and F268, in the Asian market that are produced using techniques that eliminate harmful materials like lead, cadmium and mercury. The F268 and the new E200 Eco devices and their chargers are also free of a common flame retardant that can harm the environment.
